Q:Hi Sophie, can I ask where you went to school or how you got training to become a make up artist? I am interested in pursuing this career paths as well and I'm looking for a good school to attend!

A: Hello there, based on my own experiences I strongly feel that one of the best way to train yourself as a makeup artist is by assisting other established artists who have been in the industry for decades. I'm based in NYC and had the joy to assist Vanessa Evelyn, she also offers one on one classes which are definitely an eye opener! She is amazing and I have learn so much from her. Here is a link to her site: http://www.petraalexandra.com I recommend contacting your local Artist Agencies and ask to be put in the assistant list, every agencies should have a roster of artists who need assistants. I read in yourprofile that you are from California, some of the biggest agencies there are :

Before you contact them, make sure to do your homework, find out who they represent and identify who you'd like to assist. Once you have spoken or email the bookers, it's a good idea to follow up and touch bases with them.

HOW TO BE A GREAT ASSISTANT

1. Always arrive earlier than call time

2. No gossiping, or handing out your cards or personal contact information. You are there to assist the key makeup artist and makeup her job easier not to promote yourself.

3. Be ready and very attentive. Make sure the makeup station is clean and organized at all times. Make sure to help the key makeup artist with what she needs, be prepare to hand shadows, powder, q-tips, etc.

"Begin by curling the lashes and applying a light pencil liner to the lower inner rims of the eyes to open them out and make them look fresher"

"Take a black kohl pencil and apply a thick line to the upper lash line. Blink once and you’ll see the kohl imprinted on the eye socket. Extend the kohl up to this line and fill in the entire lid. No need for an eye base, as the kohl slides onto bare skin more effectively"

"Using the same kohl pencil, draw a thick black line just under the lower lashes. Don’t sharpen the pencil - it should be rounded so you can apply a thick line without dragging the skin. Connect the lower kohl line with that on the eyelid and blend out the color to form a flick"

"With a flat eye-shadow brush, press a layer of matte black eye shadow into the kohl on the lower lash line. Continue to blend the color out to the corner flick, extending the line out towards the temple"

"For the eyelid, take a soft blending brush and lightly sweep a layer of the matte black eye shadow across the entire lid to help seal and mattify the kohl. Blend right out to the corner flick gently to blur any hard edges"

" Equip yourself with a small angled eyeliner brush. Extend the line from the tear duct down towards the nose and taper it off. Then, outline the very bottom of the kohl line on the lower lash line and extend it out towards the temple in a straight line. Blot off any mistakes with a damp cotton bud"

Actually I have a big BIG problem with my skin and it's just awful... hehe I know you're not a dermatologist but your skin is so perfect that I wanted your advices lol ^^ !! I had acne for several years and my pb is that I have dark marks on cheeks and chin, it's just ugly ugly and... ugly -_-'... So I wanted to know if you have a magical way to remove it or hide it (because foundation is not enough alas :( !!). Thanks for reading bisou bisou ^^ !!!

A: You can kiss your acne scars good-bye with diligent care, and the right acne scar treatment. If you are going out on a hot date I would avoid covering your acne with clogging makeup instead use mineral based formulas, why? Because they not only hide redness but they also don't cause congestion!

When I was 13 I discovered the magic of tweezers and for years to come I would strut the streets with really thin brow thinking it was hot. Child! it was hot, a hot mess! At one point I would even go as far as shaving them! You know that saying "less is more" well, when it comes to eyebrows "more is more" LOL! Super thin brows make your face age. Girls, it's time to sharpen that pencil, let's fill in our brows, o-k-a-y!

I can't wait for winter dark days to be over, s-e-r-i-o-u-s-l-y ! In any event, I wanted to share with y'all the spring/summer runway makeup trends.

One o the trends for this spring and summer is clear skin and healthy lips. The models at Y-3 show glowed with natural makeup.

One word "WOW". Alexander Mcqueen surely knows how to put a show! The alien-esque look like models carried a thin layer of silver sheen on their faces along with aesthetic enhancements. This is a show to remember!

Key makeup artist Pat McGrath really brought it at the Christian Dior runway show. The look is fresh and colorful. Loved everything about it, the velvet red lipstick, the shimmering cheekbones the blue and lilac eye shadow.

he girls at the Lanvin show looked amazing. WOW! Bleach eyebrows and heavy shiny black smokey eyes! The rest of the face is kept low-key, the eyes are the focal point.

What I liked about Ruffian show was the beautiful graphic eyes makeup. Love the pink shadow and the blue lines across the lids and throughout the creases. Jaw-dropping!

The makeup team at Derek Lam was not afraid to let loose, painting rainbow colors on the models' eyes. The makeup is vibrant bright and recalls the freedom in the 80's.

Winged eyes can lift the eyes for a glam look, it works on all eye shapes and H-E-L-L-O you can wear the line thin or thick, it gives the illusion of fuller lashes and bigger eyes! TOTALLY! PS. you can use pencil, liquid or just a angled brush with a cream based eyeliner, I suggest try your options and go for the one you most feel comfortable with!

It has been reported that Daul's boyfriend, who remains anonymous, was the one who reported the incident to the police, since he found her hanged in her apartment in Paris. Results from the investigation suggest that she committed suicide. Daul's mother flew over to Paris after receiving the unfortunate news. Netizens are speculating that this suicide was caused by the pressures of the fashion industry.

On October 30th, the model seemed to show signs that she was struggling; on her blog, she wrote that she was "mad, depressed and overworked." On November 5th, she wrote again on her blog, "The more I gain the more lonely it is... I know I'm like a ghost. I have nothing but myself." Three days ago on November 18, Daul Kim posted a track by Jim Rivers, I Go Deep, with the her headline commenting, "say hi to forever." This was her last entry.

Daul's body has been transferred to the hospital for autopsy test. It has not been confirmed whether or not she committed suicide. Fellow friends in the model business and G-Dragon have shared their condolences. Again, we give our condolences to Daul Kim's family, friends and fans during this time of sadness.

Q: How do you do a black shadowy eye for dark skinned women for a night on the tow?

A: I worked with all kinda of shades from ivory to ebony and everything in between. I noticed that dark skin tone looks extraordinary with dark purple and blue shadows. Dark metallic colors work too. If you are going for a black monotone color I would advice using a shadow base underneath it. The base will pick up the eyeshadow and the color will result more intense. I would also use a creamy black shadow first then layer it with black powdery shadow last. Some of my favorite brands are Illamasqua, Makeup Forever, Nars, Laura Mercier and Ben Nye. A: Girl, sometimes press powder along just won't do the trick. You can pack oil-blotting sheets in your bag and use them to keep the shine away. Make these blotting papers your best friends, as they're the only tool that absorbs oil without disturbing the makeup application! Another option is to use a mattifier, this will keep the oil under control.

In my recent entry “True Beauty” I talked about how to take care of your skin from the inside. I’m a firm believer that your lifestyle and what you choose to ingest everyday contribute to your overall skin appearance. Does great skin merely come from that? I can’t stop but wonder. Working in the fashion industry I know for a fact that behind a successful starlet there’s a dedicated team of dermatologists in charge of transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary. Great skin comes from a healthy lifestyle and a good skin care regiment. Hollywood skin however, doesn’t come from that alone but also from a regiment of costly peels, facials, and lasers treatments, luxuries the average American can’t afford on a regular basis. So who is the Hollywood go to expert when it boils down to it? Two words: Kate Somerville. When stars want to max out their precious faces they are sitting at LA super exclusive Kate Somerville’s spa for cutting edge facials. There’s a particular advanced one called “Titan” that could actually pass for a facelift. You heard right! New York Fashion Week has officially ended. The last show I worked in was the Rebecca Turbow Spring 2010 Presentation at Collective Hardware. It was the show to be if you wanted to see wearable pretty clothes. The soft grays and pale pinks dresses were the highlights. The makeup look was springy. Think sheer foundation, natural glow, dewy peachy cheeks and soft eyes.

Is that time of the year again New Yorkers. Today is the first day of Fashion Week! Reportedly, it will be its final run at Bryant Park before moving to a park in Lincoln center further uptown in 2010. The twice-annual event promises a week of spectacular soirees at the tents. Designers will present their spring collections and style-conscious celebrities will be photographed sitting in the front rows next to top magazine editors as the fashion world looks on. You can be there in the mist of it all, just make sure to be on the guest list!

I had a great time shooting with my friend photographer Nigel. And, HELLO, did you take a look at the Mercura Sunglasses? They are super dope. I love every one of them. So here are some behind the scenes pics I took, just wanted to share with you guys.

I prep the model first by toning her face and moisturizing it. She did not need much coverage, I just used a tiny bit of cream foundation and mixed it with a little bit of water.

Sometimes I make my own lipsticks colors. It's 1,2,3 simple! Just mixed lip gloss+eyeshadow or different shades of lipsticks.

Q: Hi I found your blog through your chictopia, great clothes btw and your make up website is amazing, very talented. I love statement lips too but for some reason they just don’t seem to look right on me. I recently bought Nars Jungle Red as I’m mad about poppy red it’s gorgeous but I feel something’s not right with it, I’m dark skinned (African) like a Jourdan Dunn type colour so brights normally suit me in clothes but this looks a bit off my mum said I look like something from the black and white minstrel show, HELP!! Q: You can store all your makeup in the fridge? At what setting? I've been thinking of doing that also.. Btw, I've been meaning to ask.. if you just finish putting on your foundation do you wait a couple of minutes to put concealer on and then a couple of minutes again and then set it with powder or can you do it all asap? thanks!!

A: ABSO-freaking-LUTETLY! Storing your cosmetics in a refrigerator will prolong their life span. Especially during the hot summer season, I make sure all of my lipsticks are tightly closed, sealed in a zip lock bag inside my fridge, this way they not only last longer but they won’t melt away plus they are so cool and pleasant to use this way!
... AND GUESS WHAT?
Korean company IDOCI has announced their stylish cosmetics fridge. OH SNAP!

Now, moving along the second part of your question...
I always tone + moisturize my face before applying foundation on. I wait about 1 minute in between, for the skin to absorb all the nutrients. Next I mixed foundation and concealer on the palm of my hand and using my finger tips tap it where is needed. Right after, I use a clean sponge and tap it all over my face and lastly I set my t-zone with a very light coat of translucent powder. So no, I do not usually wait for the foundation to sink in. That's what works for me.

I recently had the opportunity to ask my dear friend Marie Jean Baptiste, founder of Funky Lobes, some questions. Her line offers a beautiful collection of handmade accessories and reworked vintage. I’m a big fan of Funky Lobes edgy pieces and want to own every one of them!

S: Tell us about Funky Lobes, how did you decide to create your own business?
MJB: Well, I always knew I would eventually become an entrepreneur. I am always restless and hates to be confined to a regular job, so I've always dab into artistic endeavors such as wardrobe styling, personal shopping, designing, and just creating things. So it was a natural progression to fully launch my own fashion business.

S: I’m fond of the idea of reworking vintage pieces to create original new garments. What inspired you to do that and where do you find the vintage materials?
MJB: I have to be honest, my first inspiration to start reworking vintage is because I am frugal and hate to spend a lot of money buying new clothes, I've always edited things I already owned and people would always ask me: 'where did you get that?!'. That's when I knew it was time to start sharing it with the world!

S: What goes into designing your pieces? Would you briefly describe about your process? How long does it take from start to finish?
MJB: The pieces we design and create are usually conceptualize in a flash. I don't put much thought in the design process. Right now I am very inspired by 1970's bell sleeves and feathers. So I've been making bell sleeved dresses and feathered accessories like the feathered chokers. The dresses usually take a little longer to make but the accessories vary between 30 min to about 2 hrs.

S: What inspires you as a fashionista?
MJB: Oh I don't really see myself as a fashionista! I love clothes, I love to create things and I love helping women become more eccentric and take more risks with their wardrobe. If she feels good when she walks out of my studio, I'm a happy gal! And I am so easily inspired by so many things its kinda sickening. My world is very bright and imaginative.

S: What do you want women to know before they try on one of your clothing and jewelry?
MJB: I would want them to know that is special. Everything is either one of a kind or limited edition. And I wouldn't sell to them if I wouldn't wear it myself. And its made with a lot of love! Ha ha ha

S: Where do you plan to take your business next?
MJB: Well, I would love to start carrying Funky Lobes dresses and accessories in boutiques across the country. Definitely expand to a bigger market and keep sharing the goods!
